Are there any rules on tipping drivers? Not really. But why we take one orders and decline others.
Q: If I do not tip, I will not get my food???
A: It depends. You might get it. Most likely you even will. But it is a gamble. Experienced drivers, unless they are finishing quest/promo will not take it. Brand new drivers might. Sometimes platforms will pay extra to take it. But that is exception, not a rule.
Q: If I tip well, I’ll get my food fast and it will be hot?
A: In theory “yes”. In reality it is more complicated then that. What can cause delays: app itself, traffic, restaurant is busy. It also can be a part of stack order. For example, Doordash likes to pair non-tip orders with good tip orders. Why? Otherwise most drivers won’t take them.
What if I got food on-time, but it is not as hot as can be. Sometimes drivers can do a better job on keeping it warm. But sometimes it is totally on the restaurant. For example, McDonald’s puts cold drinks with hot food.
Q.: I got my food on-time, but it is wrong or missing items/drinks?
There are lots of reasons why it might happen. Long story short, contact support and get your refund.
Q.: So what is the fair tip for the driver?
Let’s get to actual rules on tipping. If you think u should tip % from the cost of the food. It is not always the case. I would recommend to go with the flat fee vs. % of the cost of food.
Drivers are Independent Contractors. Most drivers won’t waste time with $3-$6 orders.
I recommend to tip at least $5 on fast food orders, even if it is 1 mile away. Drivers will accept orders which pay $1-$2 per mile with minimum of $7-$10 per order.
Day of the week and time of the day also matters. Busy times for drivers are lunch: 10am to 2pm. Dinner: 5pm to 9pm. Expect to pay extra for quality service.
Let’s be reasonable. Drivers should not expect $100 tip on small orders. While Customers should not be surprised that “no tip, no trip”.
